ANTIQUE & VINTAGE SNOWMOBILE CLUB of COLORADO

1/5/12

Oh Lordie, if you did not make it to Grand Lake,  you boyz missed out on a fantastic weekend of vintage racing.
Depending on the the race, we had an average of 7 per event. We raced Vintage I and Vintage II and Sno-X –
a total of 9 races.  Everyone showed up to race, and race we did. For the ovals, we lined up inches apart and
no-one let off until the checkered flag was waiving in the air. If was fast and so much fun. The oval was about
75 yards in the straights, with banked turns that we quickly took down to the dirt (in the turns).

Finally, a huge THANK YOU you goes out to the Stoffles and everyone who hosted and volunteered their time
at the GrandLake race. The XMR crew was very gracious and very accommodating to us vintage guys as
we learned the ropes of their very well run race program.

At the end of the Day.  First place winners were:

Vintage I (Leaf Spring):  Greg Lonero

Vintage II (Leaf Spring and IFS) Gregg Channell

Vintage Sno-X:  Tony Cook

The warm weather has cancelled the Rock Springs, WY race.  For further information,  contact XMR

Snow for the Denver Snow Show?

This past October 7, 8 & 9, the Colorado State Snowmobile Association hosted its annual snow show,
officially kicking off the 2011-12 snowmobile season.  The weather in Denver was unusually soggy
with rain most of the day, making it tough on those in the swap meet.  Meanwhile, up above 9,000’,
we were getting a sweet blanket of 12” of heavy fall snow – good enough for snowmen, who happened
to also be enjoying the latest issue of Colorado’s SnowScoop, after doing some yard laps on his SRX.

The Snow Show typically has a huge draw of people, dealers and various venders.  The vintage enthusiast
have also been apart of the show for years but this year there were a few things different.  For one, they
did not separate the vintage sleds into two groups at the convention center, this made for easier viewing for
those in attendance.  Secondly, thanks to Rena and Zane Olsen, and Tim Holinka, the typical “display”
became a thing of the past, and was replaced by a “show” with two awards being handed out: one for
Peoples Choice and the other being Best of Show.

While the actual ballots counted were 1,361, another estimated 150 people did not vote, easily
validating AVSCC had 1,500 people in our section of the show.  Those kinds of numbers easily
increase our stock as an premium exhibitor’s booth you want to be positioned next to.

Counting took over an hour but was a family affair for the AVSCC t-shirt wearing family of
Andy Scott, his two  kids, Grace and Gabe (left and background) and Dean Charpentier (front).

Tim Holinka pictured with Rupp Nitro, along with his very awesome, first ever awarded
AVSCC Denver Snow Show “Best of Show” award. Congratulations Tim.

Dan Pickenpaugh, taking home the first ever awarded AVSCC Denver Snow Show
“People’s Choice” award for his finely restored Polaris Mustang.  Dan has won
so many Peoples Choice with his fantastic collection of vintage sleds, I think
we’re just going to get the trophies pre-engraved with Dan’s name on them.

I would like to thank the above mentioned people and the rest of the AVSCC gang
that energized the show with their help, and bringing their sleds out, promoting vintage
sleds and making us wish the snow would come sooner than later. Our member list is
now over 60 collectors and growing all the time.

So what’s up for the rest of the year?

Vintage Trail Rides:

Guys, the AVSCC e-mail list is there for your use* AND to put rides together.
At this time I will not be heading up any rides up this year – please take the
lead on this…. this year.  As a side note, keep in mind the race schedule below.

Xtreme Mountain Racing (XMR)   http://www.xmrracing.com:
It’s official, XMR will be hosting 3 vintage race weekends.  SnoX,  Ovals and (see Craig below).
I’ll be posting more detailed information on this as soon as I obtain it,
such as safety standards, entry fees, map/directions, etc.

1)  Grand Lake, CO Dec 31 & Jan 1, 2011-12

2)  Rock Springs, WY Jan 14 – 15, 2012

3)  Craig, CO  Feb 18 the weekend of Western Ride In
(…and the timed obstacle, which is not head to head racing, nor part of XMR – but it is a riot)

Dirty Old Sleds:

Finally, be sure to check out Mike Learn’s www.dirtyoldsled.com website.
A home grown Colorado vintage site that will allow collectors in the state
to post at a higher frequency level, as opposed to waiting for me to get things out.

The rumor was indeed true !!! There was a well attend
contingent of vintage sledders from Colorado lead by President Greg Lonero.

I do believe everyone took home some hardware from the event.

A big thank you to all of you that attended the 20th annual Western Ride-In.
This year the event went well except for the warm weather causing some mud.
The ride on Sunday was about 33 miles of fun. 2500 people attended the events at the
Winter Festival over the weekend which made it a success. We did miss some of you
that have attended in previous years so hopefully you will get to make it next year.

Mission Statement

AVSCC will compliment current Colorado venues that promote the restoration of antique and Vintage snowmobiles.
We will Organize trail rides within the State of Colorado and cultivate friendships that will help other collectors
and owners of older sleds in their preservation and restoration efforts.

Our agenda will include two trail rides.  One will launch from Cottonwood Pass, in Buena Vista, CO over the 2009
Christmas / New Years Eve Holiday weekend.  The second will be at Rabbit Ears, after the Craig, CO western Ride In show.
Details to follow.

Please provide your e-mail address to Greg or Dean so you can get the specifics on the two trails rides.

For these two trail rides, the state of Colorado requires all sleds be registered. Contact Colorado State parks for complete details on registration.
